Calgary Winter Club

The Calgary Winter Club opened in 1960 and has regularly renovated and expanded since then.

We have only one location at the corner of 14 Street and John Laurie Blvd.

Describe opportunities for advancement.

We believe in developing and promoting our people. Representative of our ability to retain staff over the long term (or career), we recognize 30-40 people each year at our Service Recognition Awards! We recognize every five years of service.

List any corporate responsibility initiatives that your organization is currently involved in.

The Calgary Winter Club has the Strength in Numbers Foundation Fund, managed through The Calgary Foundation, which we use to grant money to three organizations in particular: The Veteran's Poppy Fund (Calgary), Momentum, and KidSport (Calgary). We hold various fundraising opportunities to bolster this fund each year. We also partner with a local real estate agent and set up a trailer in our parking lot each year to collect new and in-great-condition used sporting equipment for KidSport. The last one to mention is that whenever we do a renovation and or expansion, we look to the most efficient, effective, and environmentally friendly methods of construction and finishing.

How would someone find out about opportunities at your company? How can a candidate apply?

We post our opportunities on our website, on Indeed.com, and the YEC website.

Describe your hiring and interview process?

Every employee must be interviewed at least once before they are hired. As we work with children and or seniors, employees must obtain a Vulnerable Sector Search within their first three months of employment. The CWC covers the cost for this.

What do you look for in an employee?

Customer Service is KEY: People who love helping and working with other people. Every position at the Club is responsible for safety, service, and cleanliness. "That's not my job" does not exist here.

What type of education/training/equipment do you require?

Typical entry level roles require customer service experience; the more the better. We also look for leadership qualities whether obtained through school projects, volunteering, sports, and or work experience. Beyond that, post-secondary study in fields of recreation, NCCP, pedagogy/kinesiology, hotel/restaurant management, business, and related fields are required for most other non-entry level positions.

What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions?

We follow Alberta Employment Standards for minimum age requirements except for roles which are responsible for liquor service and security whether other laws stipulate a higher age (18 years of age).

Provide a wage range for entry level positions.

Minimum wage up to and including $17.00 per hour. Several entry level positions also receive gratuities (banquets, restaurant, and bar).

What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules?

We are quite flexible with school and family schedules. Our hours of operation are Mon-Fri 5:15am to 11:00pm and Sat & Sun 6:45am to 11:00pm. Work schedules will vary depending on the department and the needs of the business.

Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?

Uniforms are provided FREE to staff.
