Calgary Public Library has 22 locations across Calgary. Throughout the year, all locations recruit for and hire for a variety of positions including primarily customer service, and occasional specialty positions such as IT, Marketing, Facilities, and Human Resources. There will also be more staff hired as new locations open in the near future.

Most positions at the Library are part-time and substitute / on-call. We also offer full-time positions.

Describe your hiring and interview process?
Some positions will include a prescreen interview by Human Resources. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview with the hiring manager and supervisor. Certain positions require pre-employment testing such as alpha numeric testing or physical demand testing. We also complete reference checks as part of the recruitment process
What do you look for in an employee?
The Library looks for employees with an understanding of what excellent customer service looks like, strong teamwork and communication skills, and the ability to work a variety of shifts as the Library is open daytime, evenings, and weekends.
What type of education/training/equipment do you require?
Education requirements will depend on the position and will
be included in the job posting on our website. This can range from high school
to Masters-level education.
What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions?
The minimum age is 18 years old. There aren’t different age requirements for different positions.
Provide a wage range for entry level positions.
The Library's entry level position is a Library Experience Assistant. The starting hourly wage is $20.11.
What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules?
Calgary Public Library is open seven days a week at 9:00 a.m. Closing hours vary throughout the week. Full-time positions are scheduled to work 35 hours per week, and part-time positions have a variety of regular guaranteed schedules. Substitute employees are required to work a minimum of 20 hours over a 60-day calendar period to maintain employment.
Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?
Customer service staff are provided with a blue vest to help identify them to patrons. This is paid for and provided by the Library.
