TELUS Spark Science Centre




Most Calgarians have visited the TELUS Spark Science Centre whether it was a school field trip or a family outing. These fond memories can be turned into a job that is out of this world! There are many job opportunities at TELUS Spark Science Centre for the summer and throughout the year.

How long have you been in business? 

Spark has been open since 1967 but has been in its current location on St. Georges Drive for 10 years

How many locations do you have in Calgary and nationally/internationally? What locations are hiring locally in Calgary and area? 

We are just located in Calgary – 220 St. Georges Drive NE. 

How many people does your organization employ? How many locally? 

We currently have approx. 180 employees but that increases during the summer up to 200+. All staff are local to Calgary. 

What type of positions do you offer?  (ex. Full time, part time, seasonal, contract etc.) 

Spark offers full-time, part-time, seasonal and contract positions.

Science education – At Spark we want to ensure people of all ages and backgrounds in Calgary are exposed to Science in a meaningful way. Spark’s purpose is to “lift people up with the power of curiosity” and our vision is to “inspire humanity to connect with science in meaningful and mind blowing ways”.

Health and Safety committee – this committee is focused on staff health and safety ensuring everyone who comes to work, leaves work safe. 

JEDDI Council – this staff committee focuses on Equity, diversity, de-colonization and inclusion in the workplace. We want to ensure all staff and guests feel welcome and safe at Spark. Spark is welcoming to ALL.

Sustainability committee – this committee focuses on efforts to make Spark more sustainable for staff, guests and our community in all we do. 

Access Program - To ensure the ticket price is not a barrier to access for underserved populations, Spark operates an access program that supports students, families and individuals requiring financial assistance to enter Calgary’s science centre. Through community partnerships, Spark warmly welcomes thousands with free passes, subsidized school programs and reduced rates. Six specialized programs are all designed to ensure that everyone can benefit from the hands-on educational experiences that a science centre has to offer. 

Solar Carport - Spark exists to lift people with the power of curiosity, and the Renfrew Solar Carport does just that. Not only does this amazing renewable energy installation completely re-imagine the Spark parking lot, but it also inspires Calgarians and guests from around the world to be curious about solar energy and the incredible technology behind it.

Describe your hiring and interview process? 

The hiring process depends on then role but it may include a pre-screen interview with human resources followed by an in person interview with the hiring manager. From there references and police checks are complete. 

What do you look for in an employee? 

Someone who is kind, curious and has a passion for science. Spark is welcoming to all so we will look for someone who also holds those values. 

What type of education/training/equipment do you require? 

This would depend on the role and would be outlined in the job posting. 

What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions? 

Our minimum age required is normally 16, however during summer camp recruitment we may consider someone as young as 14. 

Provide a wage range for entry level positions. 

All of our positions are paid above minimum wage. Science Guide, Daily Operations (Front of house staff) wage starts at $17.03 per hour. 

What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules? 

Spark is typically open from 9:00am-4-5pm during the winter and spring and as late as 9:00am-7:00pm during the summer, Spark is open 7 days per week. On occasion Spark is open until mid-night for Spark after Dark events. Shifts times would depend on the role and yes, we are absolutely flexible regarding school schedules. 

Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it? 

Yes, a Sparkly uniform is provided to all employees and no you do not have to pay for it.
