MNP Community and Sports Centre

The MNP Community & Sport Centre has been serving Calgarians and the world for 40 years. From preschoolers to high-performance athletes, there is a sport activity for everyone!

How long have you been in business?

In 2023 we are celebrating 40 years of providing training and competition facilities and services for all Calgarians; everyone from high-performance athletes to anyone in Calgary with wellness and recreational sporting needs.

How many locations do you have in Calgary and nationally/internationally? What locations are hiring locally in Calgary and area?

We are a unique one-of-a-kind sport and recreation facility in the city of Calgary!

How many people does your organization employ? How many locally?

We currently have over 260 staff, all located under the tent at Lindsay Park.

What type of positions do you offer?  (ex. Full time, part time, seasonal, contract etc.)

We offer a wide range of positions ranging from seasonal, to hourly part time, to regular Part-Time (20+ hours a week) and both salaried and hourly Full-Time positions. Different roles include Fitness Consultants/gym attendants, Customer Service, Aquatic staff (Lifeguards and Swim Instructors), Child Care attendants, and – especially over the summer – kids camp leaders! Anything to do with fitness and activity is possible with us.

What are the benefits of working for your company? Staff discounts, incentive programs, scholarships etc.

All active staff are entitled to free access to our facility and everything we have to offer: Olympic-size pools, a fully equipped fitness centre, 5 gymnasiums, running tracks, and staff group fitness classes! We have staff recognition programs in place and very flexible shifts. Our work environment is incredibly energizing and inspiring! We also have lots of fun staff activities including dress-up days, staff movie nights, and a winter holiday party.

For staff working over 20 hours a week, we have health, dental, and RRSP matching benefits available. These staff also have the opportunity to be reimbursed for courses they take related to professional development in their role, with the amount depending on their status (Full-Time/Part-Time).

 Describe opportunities for advancement.

There is lots of room for growth as demonstrated by many of our leaders – some of our managers and directors have been with us for over 15 years after starting in entry-level roles! We believe in promoting from within wherever possible, and in investing in our people as well.

How would someone find out about opportunities at your company? How can a candidate apply?

All of our jobs are posted on Indeed, as well as our website – which is also the best resource for all information about our centre!

Describe your hiring and interview process?

Managers review applications online and contact a short list of candidates for a phone interview. After that, we’ll either have applicants come in for an interview at the facility or do one over a virtual platform. Depending on the job, we may call you in for a second interview to meet with another member of our leadership team. After that, we’ll get you in for an orientation and then start in with a couple of training shifts!

What do you look for in an employee?

The most important thing we look for in a new hire is someone who shares or values of Safety, Legendary Service, Excellence, and Innovation. We also need people who, like us, are passionate about people, sport, and community! Our customers count on us to be available when they need us, so people with strong reliability and who are able to work a variety of shifts are definitely needed.

What type of education/training/equipment do you require?

This depends on the role. We have many jobs that require no education, certification, or experience although these are always an asset! Other positions, such as Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, Group Fitness Instructors, or Personal Trainers require appropriate certifications. Feel free to reach out to hr@MNPCentre.com if you have questions about a specific role.

What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions?

The minimum age to work with us is 16.

Provide a wage range for entry level positions.

For entry-level positions, we hire anywhere from $15-$17 per hour depending on years of experience. Positions requiring certifications or education are paid higher accordingly.

What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules?

There is lots of flexibility as we have shifts starting as early as 4:30AM and as late as 11:00PM! Shifts can be anywhere from 3 to 8 hours long, and generally speaking we hope all our employees can work at least one shift per week. This is something individuals work out with their manager – we are always looking to find schedules and availability that works for everyone.

Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?

We provide uniforms at no charge to our staff!
