Standard General is a local construction company that started out providing road and airport paving. Over the past 70+ years, they have expanded to do complete road building including laying pipes below ground, and land development.

How many locations do you have in Calgary and nationally/internationally? What locations are hiring locally in Calgary and area?  

We have 1 location in Calgary.  Standard General Calgary was acquired by Colas Canada Limited in 2002.  The Colas Group has operations globally. 

How many people does your organization employ? How many locally? 

In Calgary we employ between 250-300 employees.

Describe your hiring and interview process?

Our HR department conducts phone interviews with most of our applicants. Depending on the role you may have a second phone interview or an in-person interview with the hiring supervisor for that role.

 What do you look for in an employee?

We are looking for individuals that want to be a part of our team. 

 What type of education/training/equipment do you require?

Most of our employees do require a driver’s license and access to a vehicle as our office and our work locations usually don’t have transit access.  However if you don’t have this it is best to talk with one of our HR team members. 

We also provide safety training to our employees.

 What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age   requirements for different positions?

17 is our minimum age for hiring. 

Provide a wage range for entry level positions.

$20-22 per hour.

 What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum   number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding   school schedules?

As most of our positions are seasonal, the majority of our work is completed from May to November.  We usually work 5-6 days per week.  Shifts usually range from 8-12 hours days, sometimes there may be longer days.

Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?

We require our employees to have a pair of steel toed boots.  All other PPE is provided by us!
