The Youth Employment Centre (YEC) asked National Captioning Canada to answer a few questions about the company:

How long have you been in business?

National Captioning Canada is a Canadian based business that has been a pioneer in the Canadian broadcast captioning field for over 30 years. 

How many locations do you have in Calgary and nationally/internationally? What locations are hiring locally in Calgary and area?

We have one office-based location in Calgary, AB in the Sunalta area. Our captioners have the opportunity as well to work from home after approximately a year, provided they meet certain conditions.  We have people captioning all over the world including 4 provinces in Canada, in France, and in Australia. 

How many people does your organization employ? How many locally?

NCC employs approximately 35 people locally, 60 remote workers who are located throughout Canada and another 4 to 5 who work as independent contractors in Australia, the United States and Europe.  

What type of positions do you offer?  (ex. Full time, part time, seasonal, contract etc.)

NCC currently provides full time opportunities for voice captioners and stenographer captioners. We also offer part time and contract opportunities to captioners with previous experience.

What are the benefits of working for your company? Staff discounts, incentive programs, scholarships etc.

Our Captioners are giving back to the community by providing an essential service. As a company we offer co-pay health and dental benefits, group discounts through Perkopolis.  A collegial work environment is fostered and a consistent shift pattern is offered.  Potential work-from-home opportunities exist after approximately a year of service.


Describe opportunities for advancement.

After one year of on the air experience, voice captioners can find opportunities to work from home, or advance internally within the company in various roles including:

Tech Lead, Senior Captioner, Offline coordinator, Trainer, and Recruitment

List any corporate responsibility initiatives that your organization is currently involved in. 

Volunteer work at Inn From the Cold – Calgary based non-profit that offers shelter, sanctuary, and healing to assist homeless children and their families achieve independence.

Participate in Soup Sisters events - a non-profit charitable social enterprise dedicated to providing comfort to women, children and youth through the making, sharing and donating of soup. 

We maintain strong relationships with Deaf and Hard of Hearing organizations.
What are some entry level career opportunities that your organization offers?

We are seeking articulate, organized and self-motivated team players to train as Voice Captioners. New hires will train to transcribe live and pre-recorded broadcast content by respeaking the spoken word into voice recognition software for conversion into text. Editing and timecoding captions for pre-recorded content also forms a part of the job.

Describe your hiring and interview process? 

The selection process for this role includes 2 components. First you will be asked to complete an online spelling, punctuation and grammar test. If successful you will then be asked to complete a practical respeaking test. The respeaking test involves listening to two videos News and Sports related, and in a clear voice repeating out loud, in real-time as much of the dialogue as you can. Successful candidates will be asked to interview at a later date.

What do you look for in an employee?

  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
  • An articulate, clear and strong speaking voice
  • Demonstrated time-management skills
  • Ability to respond calmly, and think quickly under pressure
  • Keen interest in geography, sports, politics, and current affairs
  • Experience proofreading, editing text for 100% accuracy would be an asset
  • Native English fluency and accent
  • Spanish or French fluency considered an asset
What type of education/training/equipment do you require? 

A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required (an English degree would be considered an asset)


What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions?

19 years old

Provide a wage range for entry level positions.

$17.50 an hour training wage with a subsequent increase to $20/hr after training is completed.

What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules?
  • Training hours: 8:30-4:30pm MT
  • Shift rotation: 5:30am MT – 2:30pm MT / 2:15pm MT – 12:15am MT
  • Office hours: 9-5pm MT
Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?

No uniform. 
Dress code is relaxed, casual business attire.
