The Youth Employment Centre (YEC) asked the Banff Lodging Company to answer a few questions about their organization. 


Can you please tell youth about your company? 

Banff Lodging Company is an Employee owned company with 13 Hotels, six restaurants, 2 spas, retail/ rental store and own and operate Lux Cinema in Banff, Alberta. Even though we are a large employer we have a family-oriented style approach to our business. We like to hear ideas from employees how we can improve the guest and employee experience. We like to have fun, are down to earth and do not take ourselves too seriously. We are however, accountable and professional towards guests because this is the reason why we have jobs!

How long have you been in business? 

Banff Caribou Properties was born in 1985 with the purchase of commercial properties and the hospitality division known as Banff Lodging Company started in 1996 with our first hotel being build, Banff Caribou Lodge.

How many locations do you have in Calgary and nationally/internationally? What locations are hiring locally in Calgary and area?

We have 13 hotels (11 in Banff and two in Canmore) 6 restaurants, 2 spas a retail/ rental store and we own and operate Lux Cinema in Banff.

How many people does your organization employ? How many locally?

We currently have 700 diverse employees from all around the world. This number grows close to 1000 during the summer!

What type of positions do you offer?  (ex. Full time, part time, seasonal, contract etc.)

Describe opportunities for advancement. 

We like to promote from inside the company first to see those employees who would like to grow their careers in hospitality industry have those opportunities. Many of our middle and upper management started their careers with us in entry level positions such as housekeepers, reservations and in accounting. Some are now General Managers of our hotels and restaurants and one is even the company President!

List any corporate responsibility initiatives that your organization is currently involved in. 

We are very community-minded, we have a foundation called Pauw Foundation, named for our primary owner Wim Pauw and his late wife Nancy. A portion of our profits go back into the community through the foundation to support a healthy vibrant and active community though various organizations such as Bow Valley KidSport, Banff Child Care Centre, Banff School athletics and Community meal delivery program during the pandemic to name a few!

Candidates can create a profile, upload their resume and personal details and then apply for any positions they feel they are well suited for and interested in.

Describe your hiring and interview process? 

At BLC Hiring is a team effort, you may be contacted by phone or by email directly from the hiring manager for the position you applied for or from a recruiter from the  Human Resources team. We conduct telephone or virtual interviews.

Once you’ve been interviewed the interviewer will let you know by phone or email if you have been successful in securing a position.

If you have been successful you will receive a formal job offer letter to accept. 

Once you accept the offer  we will send you further information regarding housing and your onboarding documents.

What do you look for in an employee?

For us, the most important thing that we look for in a new employee is someone who has a positive attitude, who is friendly, team orientated and has a strong desire to provide excellent customer service to our guests.

What type of education/training/equipment do you require? 

No prior experience is required for our entry level positions. We provide on the job training for all positions. All you need is the desire to learn!

What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions?

The minimum age requirement is 18 years old. As this is a requirement in order to live in employee housing, along with providing  a clean criminal check at move in.

Provide a wage range for entry level positions.

Most positions begin at $15.00/hour and go up from there.

What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules?

The hospitality industry has varied shifts depending on the position. We generally work 5 days per week and our weekends tend to fall mid-week since we are busiest on the weekends and holidays. We work between 29-44 hours per week, hours can go up and down depending on business levels. You must work at least 29 hours per week to live in Employee housing.

Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?

A uniform is provided free of charge. Prior to beginning work your manager will let you what you would need to provide such as shoes, pants etc.
