September Employer Spotlight

The Youth Employment Centre (YEC) asked Enable to answer a few questions about their organization.

How long have you been in business?

ENABLE was founded in 2016.

We have been in business for 5 years!

How many locations do you have in Calgary and nationally/internationally? What locations are hiring locally in Calgary and area?

We operate in Calgary and area. We do not have a storefront office but are available online. We are always looking for new and experienced support workers.

How many people does your organization employ? How many locally?

We currently have around 40 support workers matched!

What type of positions do you offer?  (ex. Full time, part time, seasonal, contract etc.)

We offer part-time, full-time, and casual positions.

There are also seasonal positions for summer camps, PD days, and holidays.

What are the benefits of working for your company? Staff discounts, incentive programs, scholarships etc.

Being a support worker offers great practical skills for future healthcare providers and disability practitioners. It is an awesome resume builder!

Describe opportunities for advancement.

Support workers are matched with a particular client for ongoing support. Some support workers have been hanging out with their client a few times a week for years. This allows a growing bond and friendship between the worker and the client. There is opportunity for support workers to accept additional clients if they are looking for a new challenge.

List any corporate responsibility initiatives that your organization is currently involved in.

We are a certified B corporation for business practices that are socially and environmentally responsible. See https://bcorporation.net/ for more information.

What are some entry level career opportunities that your organization offers? Please attach job descriptions. Youth want to know as much detail as possible before deciding to apply.

How would someone find out about opportunities at your company? How can a candidate apply?

We are always looking for great support workers with availability for at least 1 shift per week. Interested persons can fill out our online application through our website: http://enablecommunity.ca/support-worker-application-form/

Describe your hiring and interview process?

Candidates will submit with their application a resume, CPR certification, and a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. If they do not yet have their CPR or Police Information Check, they can still apply by sending us proof of registration or a receipt. Candidates that submit a full application will be contacted with the next steps!

What do you look for in an employee?

We look for candidates with availability of at least one shift per month. Successful candidates will be organized, detail-oriented, punctual, and will exhibit strong rapport building and communication skills. Many families also request that their ideal worker will be energetic, creative, and have firm boundaries. Experience working with people with disabilities or in childcare is an asset.

What type of education/training/equipment do you require?

While some positions require a support worker with specific training and skills, many positions do not require any specific training.

With a variety of positions available and more families needing support on an ongoing basis, support workers with no experience and those with extensive experience can find a position to suit them.

What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions?

Our support workers should be at least 17 years of age for summer camp opportunities. Year-round opportunities are usually 18 years of age and up.

Provide a wage range for entry level positions.

The wage ranges for entry positions are $15.00-17.05/hour. The average support worker wage is $19.48/hour.

What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules?

Shift times are dependent on the position.

Some positions require a worker on Wednesday evenings or before and after school care, for example while other positions are more flexible.

As another example, some families that want to fill 10 hours per week and plan those hours based on the worker’s availability.

There are also overnight positions. The support worker will be able to view the hours requested prior to accepting a position with any particular family.

Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?

There are no uniforms. Support workers should wear clothing that is comfortable for them to work and play in!
