How long have you been in business?

Rusty Pipe Mechanical was formed over 30 years ago by Russell (Rusty) Welch. It started out as a one man shop, and over the years grew to what it is now.

We are a service company that has customers throughout Calgary and Southern Alberta.

How many people does your organization employ? How many locally?

We employ nine people, two office staff, and estimator/sales person, and six technicians varying between Journeymen and Apprentices.

What type of positions do you offer?

We hire full-time and part-time staff.

What are the benefits of working for your company?

We are like a big family at Rusty Pipe Mechanical. We provide work shirts and pants so all an employee has to buy is their work boots. We are also a unionized company, and after a three month probation period, we indenture new hires into the union.

Describe opportunities for advancement.

We encourage all our apprentices to attend school in order to obtain their Journeyman certificate. With each successful intake in school, the employee advances.

List any corporate responsibility initiatives that your organization is currently involved in.

Every year Rusty Pipe Mechanical donates money to the “Dreams Take Flight” organization helping those children with mental or physical disabilities enjoy a well-deserved trip to Disneyland.

What are some entry level career opportunities that your organization offers?

We look for first year apprentice plumbers. Responsibilities include assisting Journeymen, parts running, maintenance around the office, and learning about the plumbing trade. We encourage all first year employees to learn and work alongside our more experienced technicians to get a more hands on learning approach.

Describe your hiring and interview process?

We would have a candidate come in for an initial interview with our office staff. Once their resume has been reviewed and discussed, a candidate would meet with Rusty, making sure it is the right fit for the candidate, and Rusty Pipe Mechanical.

What do you look for in an employee?

We look for employees who work well with others, who are not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and learn new things. We expect many things from our technicians, but never more than they can handle, and we provide the support through mentorship to ensure this happens.

What type of education/training/equipment do you require?

Minimum requirement is a high school diploma. CSTS would be considered an asset, as well as any pre-employment classes.

What is the minimum age required to work for your company? Are there different age requirements for different positions?

We are looking for applicants who are 18 years and older.

Provide a wage range for entry level positions.

First year plumber rate is $19.25/hr.

What are the hours of the business and general shift times? Are there a minimum number of hours someone needs to work per week? Is there flexibility regarding school schedules?

Our hours are from Monday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm. Our dispatchers send out information to the technicians, on average our employees work 36-40 hours per week. Although Rusty Pipe Mechanical is a service company, so 40 hours a week is not a guarantee.

Is a uniform provided or do employees have to pay for it?

A work shirt is provided, as well as an allowance for an employee to buy their own blue jeans. This is a mandatory requirement for all technicians, and spare shirts are provided.
